How Does UV Light Technology in an Exhaust Hood System Work?

How Does UV Light Technology in an Exhaust Hood System Work?

Grease deposits in extractor hoods and exhaust air ducts of commercial kitchens cause high cleaning costs, severe odour nuisances and increased fire hazards. Treatment with high-energy UV radiation photolysis, destroys and neutralises the molecules of greases and odours. This keeps the surface of the extractor hood clean and substantially facilitates the cleaning of the exhaust air duct. Where daily cleaning by hand was required before the exhaust air-duct now needs almost no manual cleaning at all.

Protech Electrostatic Precipitator Components

To better understand electrostatic precipitators, let’s take a closer look at their main components.
1. Ionizing Electrodes: These electrodes, also known as corona electrodes, are responsible for ionizing the particles in the gas stream. They generate a corona discharge, which charges the particles, preparing them for collection. 2. Collection Electrodes: The collection electrodes, also called plates or tubes, are where the charged particles are collected. They have an opposite charge to the ionizing electrodes, creating an electrostatic field that attracts the charged particles. 3. Rapping System: The rapping system is used to remove the collected particles from the collection electrodes. It consists of mechanical devices or electromagnetic hammers that vibrate the electrodes, causing the dust cake to dislodge and fall into a hopper. 4. Hopper: The hopper is a container located at the bottom of the electrostatic precipitator. It collects the dust and other collected particles that have fallen from the collection electrodes. The hopper can be equipped with devices such as screw conveyors or rotary valves for efficient removal of the collected material. 5. Power Supply: The power supply provides the necessary voltage and current for the electrostatic precipitator to function. It ensures that the ionizing electrodes are charged and the collection electrodes have the appropriate voltage to attract the charged particles.

Benefits of UV in Commercial Kitchens

  • Clears oil and grease from the exhaust hood and ductwork
  • No more hood and duct cleaning
  • Protects against fire
  • Eradicates odour from effluent air
  • Easily retro-fitted into existing exhaust equipment
  • Improved airflow and reducedo perating costs
  • Full-service plan and call-out program

Laboratory Testing

Recent testing of the CleanHood System was conducted by Star Laboratory PTE in Singapore, an NEA-approved testing facility.

Testing was conducted on two aspects of the UV Care CleanHood system performance: Odour Reduction and Oil Mist Reduction. The results were as follows:

Retro Fitting The CleanHood System

The simple and effective design of the CleanHood UV Filtration System affords kitchen designers the opportunity to easily retro-fit the equipment into their existing kitchen hood equipment. Installation takes only around 2 hours thereby not affecting kitchen operations in any way. Installation does not impact on the extraction performance of any kitchen hood. Power requirement for the UV CareCleanHood System is simply access to a permanent 220/240V supply.

The CleanHood UV Filtration System comes in two (2) tube-lengths: 846mm and 1,554mm. Tube life, under normal use, is 8,000 hours. Systems are delivered in packs of two (2) tubes and multiples of this can be purchased to ensure total coverage inside the plenum of any exhaust hood – new or existing (retro-fit). Please see the graphic below for the Top-Down view of a typical 3.8 metre width exhaust hood and the relevant placement of the UV tubes. A hood of this size would require purchasing four (4) CleanHood Systems.

Protech’s Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) work by ionizing and trapping grease and smoke particles onto collector plates.

They have high particulate removal efficiency combined with low static pressure. Highly effective in removing smoke, grease and odors.

Protech’s UV-C & Ozone Filtration

•High energy UV-C lamps combined with Ozone are used to break down odours and traces of grease in the extract air by the mechanism of photolysis and ozonolysis – combining high intensity UV-C light with ozone technology.
